Lift-top coffee tables provide a convenient work or dining surface in the living room. If you don't want to buy a whole new, expensive coffee table, transform the one you already have (assuming you have a wooden table).

Instructables user Lofgren upgraded his coffee table so that the top could be pulled up to a higher table. In addition to making the cantilever hinges out of wood, he also built in extra storage space underneath the table top.
To transform your coffee table, all you need is some basic carpentry skills and a willingness to take this piece of furniture apart. (You can also purchase a folding table mechanism if you don’t want to make the handles yourself; one version I found costs $50, while another, sturdier-looking version costs $210.)
