Midnight screenings are rarely more fitting than “Baby Invasion,” Harmony Korine’s latest experimental, unconventional, video-game-esque assault on the senses, which made its world premiere in Venice on Saturday night to an 8.5-minute standing ovation.

The film featured a provocative array of unique footage, as we saw our heavily armed, baby-faced criminals torturing people, dancing to the thumping techno music of Burial, chopping up huge piles of coke and giving the middle finger while sitting on the toilet.

Whatever we saw, the audience seemed to swallow it whole. When the hour and 20 minute film ended, the crowd erupted in cheers as Korine danced to the beat that formed the closing credits. And it didn’t stop there: fans erupted in a chant of “Harmony! Harmony! Harmony!” as the director waved his arms as if to say, “More! More! More!”

At one point in the film, one of the thousands of Twitch-like comments that appeared in rapid succession across the left side of the screen: “This plot deserves an Oscar.” While there are many things “Baby Invasion” deserves, an Oscar for plot probably isn’t one of them.
