Helldivers 2 players are in an uproar after Sony made it mandatory to link a PlayStation Network account to play the game on Steam, leading to a wave of negative and angry reactions.
Helldivers 2 now requires a PlayStation account 😡
A linked PlayStation Network account had been listed as a requirement in Helldivers 2's terms of service since launch, but Sony said it has made the requirement optional "due to technical difficulties experienced at launch." All new players who join on or after May 6 will be required to link Steam to a PlayStation Network account, and all current players will have until June 4 to link their accounts.
The player base’s reaction to the announcement has been overwhelmingly negative. On Steam, the recent review score has dropped to just mostly positive, after months of overwhelmingly good reviews. On the day of the announcement, at the time of writing, Helldivers 2 has received 7,842 negative reviews, compared to just 555 positive ones. “Forcing your players to create a PSN account months after launch is extremely undemocratic,” one player wrote.
On the game's busy Discord server, players are furious. Dozens of users are sharing the same message, citing contradictory statements from Sony and the Arrowhead CEO. The server's moderators are also said to have threatened them with a timeout.
