The runaway success of Helldivers 2 recently took a major hit due to an unexpected PlayStation Network decision by Sony. If you're not in the know, here's a full breakdown of the huge controversy.
Helldivers 2 now requires a PlayStation account 😡
Helldivers 2 is comfortably one of the biggest successes of 2024, if not the biggest, due to how unanimously beloved the shooter is and how ridiculously popular it is. Helldivers 2’s political satire intertwined with its tight gunplay is one of the shining examples of a live-service shooter.
In one fell swoop, Sony threw a spanner in the works for Helldivers 2, leading to negative reviews, hostility from gamers and unrest at developer Arrowhead Game Studios.
On May 3, 2024, Sony announced out of the blue that starting May 6, all Helldivers 2 users on PC would need to be connected to a valid PlayStation Network account in order to play the shooter. This meant that if you played Helldivers 2 for the first time starting May 6, you would need to link your Steam account to a PSN account, if you didn't already have one.
