The iPod wasn’t the first MP3 player. A number of companies had released MP3 players before Apple unveiled one of its flagship products. But the iPod was the first truly great MP3 player, and it was the one that made the MP3 player an indispensable device for most people.
History of the iPod Classic
The original iPod didn't have the largest storage capacity or the most features, but it did have a very simple user interface, a beautiful industrial design, and the refinement that is characteristic of Apple products (there's also an interesting story about how the device got its name).
