An upcoming ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court could impact the way you use the Internet.
The Supreme Court Could Destroy the Internet Next Week
Google is facing a ruling in a lawsuit over YouTube’s recommendation engine. The tech giant, which owns YouTube, is fighting to be covered by a legal liability shield known as Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Experts say the case could have far-reaching implications.
“If the Supreme Court rules negatively on the issues before them in the upcoming session, we can be virtually certain that the entire industry will be gutted within weeks,” Nicholas Creel, a business law professor at Georgia College and State University, told Lifewire in an email interview.
Google recently filed a defense brief in Gonzalez v. Google, arguing that manipulating Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects companies from liability for the content of their users' messages, would undermine "a central building block" of the Internet.
