A VR headset needs to be comfortable, and to be comfortable, it needs to be light. Apple’s headset will reportedly be a powerful beast, but even power-hungry M-series chips need batteries, and batteries are both bulky and heavy. Apple’s solution, according to serial Apple rumor mill rep Mark Gurman, is to separate the battery from the headset and connect the two with a cable. And this could be the design decision that takes Apple’s headset to a new level.
“I think one reason the VR industry hasn’t grown as quickly as predicted is because the devices are difficult to use. Apple has built its business on disrupting the norm, releasing innovative products that simplify the user experience, and I hope they can do that again,” DJ Smith, VR expert and CCO of Glimpse Group, told Lifewire via email.
Ideally, Apple would like to put its augmented reality tech into glasses, but to get there we have to go through the big ugly phase, just as we did with iPhones, laptops, and iPads. Someday, we might have AR glasses that seem as impossible as AirPods did when they launched. But not yet.
