Gen Z loves the negative vibes about iMessage and it makes them buy all kinds of other things from Apple.
Blue Bubbles vs. Green Bubbles: Explained!
According to the Financial Times, fear of ostracism is driving younger people to use Apple’s messaging service. If they don’t, their messages in the iMessage app will appear in green bubbles instead of the original blue bubbles, and this can lead to “pretty insane” social pressure, the report says. And, like a gateway drug, it leads users to buy iPads, Macs and all of Apple’s other products. The result? Apple is cooler than its competitors.
“Apple has become a lifestyle, while other brands (especially Microsoft) are just products, because Steve Jobs understood the importance of understanding the humanities/people, even in the world of technology,” Dr. Michele Ramsey, associate professor of communication studies and women's studies at Penn State Berks, told Lifewire via email.
Gen Z, or those born after 1996, spends about 6 hours a day online on their phones. Much of that time is spent chatting with friends. Outside of the US, the majority of people use WhatsApp, but in the US, iMessage is the platform of choice. When a conversation is taking place between iOS users, iMessage is fully functional and messages from all chat members appear in blue bubbles.
