Apple is starting to reject apps that don’t meet new privacy guidelines introduced with iOS 14.5, a move that experts say could lead to a complete shake-up of the App Store.

Apple has made it clear that it plans to overhaul the way apps collect user data with iOS 14.5, and is now taking steps to put these new guidelines into practice. Multiple developers have reportedly begun receiving reports that their apps have been rejected from the App Store for not meeting all of the new requirements. Because Apple is taking such control over data collection, experts say it could lead to major changes in the way you get new apps.

"A lot of developers are going to have to make a decision quickly. They can either comply or they can try to fly under the radar and hope they don't get caught," Dave Hatter, a cybersecurity leader, told Lifewire in an interview. "The ones that do comply are going to have to sit down and figure out how to monetize their app."

The AppTrackingTransparency feature, sometimes referred to as ATT, is Apple’s response to the ongoing data collection issues that smartphone users have been experiencing for years. With the release of iOS 14.5, the company now requires all app developers to include a notice explicitly asking for permission to track how users use their apps and whether their data can be tracked in other apps.
