A growing wave of note-taking tablets and handwriting apps are coming to the aid of users tired of using their PCs the same way during the coronavirus pandemic.

The keyboard alternatives come as a recent study claims that handwriting is better for the brain than typing. Apple recently added Scribble with the release of iOS 14, a feature that uses handwriting recognition to enter text on iPads. Meanwhile, a number of tablets have recently been released that focus on handwriting, such as the electronic, paper-based reMarkable 2.
"Handwriting traditionally has some advantages over typing," said Ross Rubin, a technical analyst at Reticle Research, in an email interview. "It's something that most people learn sooner and therefore it's a shorter learning curve and more accessible, and pens take up less space than physical keyboards."
However, Rubin emphasizes that digital notes "allow you to enter text in a natural way, but then also provide the benefits of typed text, such as searchability."
