When you sign up for Internet service, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides you with a modem that can access that Internet service. This guide will walk you through setting up your ISP modem and creating a home network.
How do I set up a modem? | Internet setup
Different ISPs offer different models of modems. However, all modems have input jacks to establish an Internet connection and output jacks that create a home network.
If you purchased cable internet, find a cable jack in your home to plug the modem into. If you purchased DSL telephone internet, you will need to plug the modem into your home's telephone jack. Find the jack in the area of the house where you want to place the modem.
Connect one end of the coaxial (or coax) cable that came with your modem to the TV wall jack. Connect the other end to the coaxial port on the back of your cable modem. If you are using a cable modem, you will see a coaxial port that you can screw the other end of the coaxial cable into. If you are using a DSL modem, the port on the modem will be labeled something like "Phone In" or "Phone."
