A Wi-Fi extender does exactly what its name suggests: it extends your Wi-Fi signal to help you get internet access to more areas of your home. If you live or work in a huge space, one with multiple floors or one with thick walls or other obstructions, a Wi-Fi extender will spread your Wi-Fi signal throughout the entire area.

How do Wi-Fi boosters actually work?

These devices connect wirelessly to the router and extend the Wi-Fi signal to areas that the router can't reach. You may have to do some trial and error with the physical placement before you decide on a location for yours.

Wi-Fi extenders come in two types: small ones that plug into a wall socket and larger desktop devices that often have Ethernet ports. Whichever type you choose, it will extend the coverage area of your router.

When you install a Wi-Fi extender, you have the choice of two networks (the router's and the extender's) on two bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). The first time, you must manually connect your device to the extender.
