The dark web, for the uninitiated, is a virtual neighborhood outside the confines of the normal, everyday internet (including the website you’re looking at right now). It’s a place that Google and Bing don’t index, and you need special tools to get to it.

It’s a place where you find data breaches and illegal trade, but also legitimate, legal online activities that users want to do without attracting the attention of law enforcement or governments. It’s a part of the internet that’s less regulated and more obscure, for better or worse.

You’ll come across these terms a lot as you travel the Internet, and there’s some confusion about what they mean. I’ll start with the deep web: everything online that isn’t indexed by regular search engines, so that includes pages behind paywalls, private databases, email archives, corporate intranets, and so on.
