With the cost of water, electricity, and internet services rising, it’s understandable that you’d want to find a way to get these services cheaper or even free. However, that doesn’t mean you have to forgive a neighbor or other malicious person who abuses your utilities.
How To: Find Out If Someone Is Stealing Your WiFi
The most challenging aspect of utility theft is how easy it is to not even notice it’s happening, since most of us have only a vague idea of how much utilities cost, let alone what our normal usage looks like. Whether you have reason to suspect you’re funding someone else’s lifestyle or not, here’s how to tell if someone is stealing your utilities.
The easiest and most obvious sign that someone is stealing a utility is a sudden, unexplained spike in your bill. If your behavior hasn’t changed and your energy or water bill is suddenly much higher than usual, you either have an infrastructure problem (like a leaky pipe) or an unscrupulous neighbor who is tapping into your supply. Always pay close attention to your bills, especially if you have automatic payments set up.
While water and power surges show up as an increase in volume, internet bills aren't very useful for detecting profiteers unless they're using so much data that you're over your internet provider's data limit.
