It's not allowed, but it happens
How do you know if there is spyware on your computer?
Schools are not legally allowed to spy on their students via school-issued laptops or webcams. However, there have been multiple reported cases of schools or colleges installing spyware or requiring parents to install spyware on their children’s devices.
Remember the “WebcamGate” scandal that led to the federal class action lawsuit Robbins v. Lower Merion School District? Well, that ended with a staggering $610,000 settlement by the school district to settle that lawsuit after they were caught secretly spying on students in the privacy of their homes.
School officials did this via webcams built into the laptops, with more than 66,000 photos taken in secret.
