While vinyl flooring is known for its durability, that doesn’t mean it’s completely resistant to damage. The good news is that repairing a small tear, scratch, or gouge in your vinyl flooring is often a fairly simple task. I enlisted the help of three flooring and home maintenance experts to walk me through the steps involved in these vinyl floor repairs.
How do I repair cracks in a vinyl floor?
While major vinyl flooring repairs are usually best left to the professionals, scratches, cracks and gouges in the surface of a vinyl floor are relatively easy to repair yourself. The damage may be minor, but as Sean O’Rourke, a 30-year veteran of the flooring industry and national director of merchandising for Floor Coverings International, points out, “it can be unsightly because it’s usually in a conspicuous spot.”
Repairing deep scratches, cracks, and gouges often requires removing and replacing the damaged portion of the vinyl flooring. But if you’re only dealing with shallow, surface-level stains, consider trying one of these methods:
Brett Labeka, a building maintenance expert at DIY app Frontdoor, recommends applying a small amount of WD-40 or jojoba oil to the scratched area and then gently rubbing it in with a cloth in a circular motion. “Wipe away any excess oil and then let it dry completely,” he says.
