Tech companies are promising to build safety measures into artificial intelligence (AI), but some experts say their efforts may not be enough.
How does Google protect us from artificial intelligence?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called on Congress to implement regulations to address the risks of AI during testimony on Capitol Hill this week. Meanwhile, groundbreaking researcher Geoffrey Hinton recently resigned from Google to speak out about the technology’s dangers. The developments are a sign of growing concerns around AI.
“While Google’s recent efforts to increase transparency and safety around AI-generated content and strengthen its safe browsing features are commendable, they are the first few steps on a long journey,” Ani Chaudhuri, the CEO of data governance firm Dasera, told Lifewire in an email interview. “There is still a significant gap to fill when it comes to protecting users from AI.”
Altman told lawmakers his biggest fear was that advanced AI technology could “do significant damage to the world” if proper measures are not taken.
