New navigation apps let you plot a route around heavily polluted areas, saving your lungs.
Best GPS Apps: iPhone vs. Android (Which is the Best GPS App?)
E-bike maker Cowboy recently added a navigation feature to the latest version of its app, helping riders avoid high-pollution areas. Car maker Tata Motors allows drivers to see real-time information about the air quality in their surroundings on their car’s dashboard, and issues alerts when they enter an area with poor air quality. Experts say getting hyperlocal data on air pollution is essential.
“Just as our air changes with wind and weather patterns, so does air pollution,” Christoph Burkhardt, CEO of air purifier maker OneLife, said in an email interview. “It can change virtually minute by minute, and unless you have an air purifier that’s coupled with real-time monitoring, there’s no way for that purifier to optimize its performance for the level of air pollution it’s encountering.”
Air pollution is a growing concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified air pollution as a significant health threat, responsible for nearly 7 million deaths each year. WHO data shows that nine out of 10 people breathe air that exceeds guideline limits and contains high levels of pollutants, with low- and middle-income countries having the highest exposure.
