Jessica Kim is unlike any other streamer. She combines a new Gen Z aesthetic with the vulnerability of the old guard of Millennials. She is a content creator for the new age, and her meteoric rise in the industry is one to watch.
How come her voice doesn't shake??
Kim initially found a place online through the beauty and fashion world on Instagram, with highly curated, styled photos. After a few years, she amassed nearly 130,000 followers, and her desire to connect with them led her to Twitch, where she now has over 80,000 followers and counting.
"I didn't start Twitch to play games or make money. A lot of people see it as a way to make money, but I didn't know anything about Twitch… It was a lot of fun, so I kept going," she said in a phone interview with Lifewire. "I credit streaming with helping me grow out of my shy phase, because I get to share my thoughts online so much and it helps me get better at speaking. I think that's carried over into my real personal life outside of the internet."
The aspiring influencer wasn’t always as online-obsessed as she now appears. Growing up, her family moved from South Korea to the suburbs of Toronto, to the Markham-Thornhill area, where her mother’s strict upbringing kept her from indulging in 21st-century excesses like the internet. Instead, she found refuge in television. Although the internet and access to video games were strictly regulated, she would spend hours binge-watching TV shows, dreaming of a life like the kids she saw on her favorite Disney Channel originals.
