Being raised by refugee parents came with many challenges, but Janet Phan drew on her experiences and now wants to help young female engineers develop themselves.
3 Key Elements for Successful Mentoring | Janet Phan | TEDxZurich
Phan is the founder and director of Thriving Elements, a Seattle-based nonprofit that connects young women in underserved communities with STEM mentors. Thriving Elements was born out of Phan’s experience with mentors and how influential they were to her career success.
“Ultimately, it was my mentors who gave me the opportunity to develop the skills needed to provide technology advice and open doors for other people,” Phan told Lifewire in a video interview.
Thriving Elements launched in March 2016, and since then the nonprofit has welcomed five groups of mentors and mentees. Mentors connect with mentees in grades eight through eleven who are seeking careers in STEM fields.
