Experts warn that users should not rely on LG for repairs after the company shut down its mobile division, and that they are better off buying a new phone from another manufacturer.
Saying goodbye to LG phones – what went wrong?
With the announcement that LG is shutting down its mobile business, many users are wondering what the future of device support for their LG phones looks like. Experts say that some users find themselves footing the bill for repairs once the warranty period is over.
"LG is legally obligated to provide technical support for as long as warranty coverage is active," Stacey Kane, EasyMerchant's business development lead, explained in an email to Lifewire. "However, in other countries where companies are only required to reimburse for their warranty services for a certain period of time after their liquidation, LG users may be faced with [covering] their own costs to repair their units by seeking the assistance of independent technicians."
LG has made a clear commitment to provide support, including operating system updates, for its devices after the permanent closure of its smartphone division. The company expects to complete the process in July 2021 and plans to continue selling its latest line of devices until supplies run out.
