When it comes to beauty tools, your hairbrush gets dirty really quickly. On average, people shed 50-100 hairs a day, many of which get caught in your brush, along with a buildup of hair products, dead skin cells, and dust (an ideal environment for bacteria and fungus to grow). If you don’t keep your brush clean, this dirt can get back into your hair, not only making it dirty and increasing the risk of tangles and damage, but it can also worsen scalp conditions like dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.

How to properly clean your brushes

If your brush looks like it needs to be cleaned, it definitely needs to be cleaned. You should remove the bristles from your brush as they build up (every day or so) and give it a deep clean once a week if you use styling products like gel or hairspray (or every two to three weeks if you don’t).

Most importantly, pull the hair out of the bristles. Start with your fingers, but if there are any clumps, you can use a pointed object like a chopstick, toothpick, or sharp comb to pull them out, or cut them off with scissors. Do this regularly to prevent buildup.
