Tired of seeing fake news and hateful content on popular online platforms? European parliamentarians have taken a major step towards disinfecting social media, and experts believe its benefits could extend beyond the European Union (EU).
What is the EU Digital Services Act and what impact does it have on Big Tech?
The European Parliament, the EU’s legislative body, has approved the Digital Services Act (DSA). The law aims to limit the power of internet giants such as Facebook, Amazon and Google through several provisions.
“The European Parliament has just made history by passing a landmark vote on the Digital Services Act, which could set the global standard for regulating Big Tech and protecting people online,” online activist network Avaaz tweeted.
After months of deliberation, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted overwhelmingly in favour of an initial approval of the comprehensive rules contained in the DSA.
