There are many reasons why you might want a dash cam, from protecting against theft, recording accidents or traffic surveillance, to adding cameras to your older car. The Nextbase iQ line of dash cams does all that and more, but requires a subscription for the more high-profile stuff.

I was curious to see what a dash cam could do for my older Ford Escape, and I wasn’t disappointed. Installing the dash cam was pretty simple; there’s a mount that attaches to your window on either side of your mirror, and a long cable that attaches to your car’s OBD port (and hides under your car’s interior trim). And that’s it. You can also add a backup camera to your setup, but that’s wired too, so you’ll need to figure out how to route the cable back to your rear window.
The Nextbase iQ dashcam is available in three resolutions, 1K ($499.99), 2K ($599.99) and 4K ($699.99), all in black. They all offer the same technical features, the only difference being the resolution of video they can capture.
If you want to use the Nextbase dash cam in free mode, you can connect to the camera via the iQ app, use voice control to start recording or turn the camera off, and receive real-time text notifications for things like someone approaching your car or an accident (handy if you're not driving).
