Google has now removed the ability to purchase or rent movies and TV shows through the Google TV interface. Thankfully, anything you previously purchased will still be available on Google TV and YouTube through your Google account, but going forward you will have to do all of your purchasing and renting through YouTube.
Google TV and Chromecast features you're not using (but should)
If you’ve never bought anything from YouTube before and are wondering how it works, the steps below will walk you through the process. It’s not difficult and since YouTube is available almost everywhere, there are many devices you can use to watch your collected media.
All of this comes with one big caveat that I always think is worth mentioning: you don’t actually own what you purchase as digital media, because the company that provides or hosts that content can pull it up at any time. Licensing agreements are always in flux, and they apply to purchased videos as well as streamed videos. There’s always a chance that your digital library could disappear, which is why many people still prefer physical media (and digital backups), but if you’re going digital, Google and Apple are probably your safest bets to ensure that your movies and TV shows will stick around for as long as you do.
If you’re using YouTube on the web, you should see a navigation panel on the left (click the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner of your browser window if they’re not visible). From this side panel, you can select Movies & TV to view the content that YouTube is currently promoting. This selection typically includes the latest movies and shows, though you might find some classics in there too.
