Keeping your Gmail page clean is incredibly important. If your page is cluttered, finding a label or an email becomes too much of a hassle. The space that the email label list shares with the Google Chat widget is quite limiting. A long list of labels and a long list of Hangout contacts inevitably results in seemingly endless scrolling.

You can always choose to hide a label or the chat and measurement sections in the menu to reduce scrolling. Extensions like Gmail label column resizer and cloudHQ's Resize Gmail Sidebar allowed users to expand the sidebar horizontally. Users could not resize the Chat and Measurement section of the sidebar vertically for convenience.
