Until very, very recently, Snapchat strictly adhered to the rule that the username you enter when creating a new account cannot be changed. The app attributed it as a measure put in place to ensure the security and privacy of the user's account.

Snapchat views a username as a user’s unique identifying token; it also doesn’t allow account data like Memories to be transferred between accounts. It’s easy to understand that a username on Snapchat is similar to the ID you set up when you create a new email account — no two accounts can have the same username; any attempt would be immediately rejected with a username taken.
