Short circuits in a computer are usually caused by loose pieces of metal that create an electrical connection where there shouldn’t be one. Short circuits can cause the PC to shut down without warning or error message. They can also cause the PC to not turn on at all, potentially causing damage.

Electrical shorts in computers are often caused by loose screws in the case that have come into contact with the motherboard or other internal components. Screws secure almost every component inside the case, including video cards, sound cards, hard drives, optical drives, and other components or hardware add-ons.
Turn off your computer and unplug it. Also disconnect all cables and peripherals, such as monitor cable, printer cable, Ethernet cable, keyboard and mouse cables, and any other USB devices such as external hard drives. Gently pick up your computer and gently shake it from side to side. If you hear a rattling sound, a screw may have come loose and is rolling around inside your case.
A few gentle shakes will usually loosen it and make it go into the bottom of the case where you can find it. If the screw is stuck somewhere that you can't reach with your fingers, try using a pair of long-nose tweezers or needle-nose pliers to get at it.
