Checking how much space an app takes up on an iPhone is more accurate because the actual size of an app is not just the app itself. Apps also require preferences, stored files, and other data. An app that takes up 10 MB when you download it from the App Store can grow to many times that size once you start using it. You can only check how much space those extra files take up on your device.
