In Windows 7 and Windows 8/10 there is a new folder under C:/Windows called WinSxS which basically stores dll and component files. It also stores older versions of all dll and component files and can become quite large. In addition, the backup folder takes up a lot of space which becomes very large after you install a Service Pack such as SP 1 for Windows 7.
