Shortly after I moved into my first dorm, a present arrived in the parcel room for me. My mother was unhappy with the paper-thin mattresses she had seen when she helped me move, so she sent me a luxurious, fluffy mattress topper. It fitted around my mattress and added inches of foam for my body to sink into after a long day of studying (or procrastinating). I have never missed one since.
How do you clean a mattress topper?
Mattress toppers are a great, inexpensive way to improve any sleeping situation. But like anything that comes in close contact with your body, especially when you sweat and roll around, they get dirty. Think about how much sweat and gunk is in that foam. That foam, as great and comfortable as it is, is also the reason they are so hard to clean.
First, there is one exception to everything described below about cleaning a mattress topper: if yours is filled with feathers instead of foam, it can go in the wash just like a standard pillow. Double-check the instructions on the tag, but you should be fine.
In the event of a stain, blot it with vinegar or another mild cleaner. Don’t soak it; only your cloth should be damp. Excess moisture will seep into the foam and cause mold growth, says Gold Bond Mattress CEO Bob Naboicheck. Let it air dry completely for at least a day.
