The .APK packages that you download and install from the Internet are a bit different from your usual Google Play Store applications. After installation, these packages do not automatically destroy themselves, but instead remain silently in your Downloads folder. If you happen to download a lot of applications from the Internet, chances are that they are the main reason behind your rapidly diminishing storage space.

Single-use, seemingly lightweight documents such as movie tickets, flight bookings or bill payment receipts can also take up a lot of space over time. These all go straight to the Downloads folder, which more often than not remains out of our sight.
