Welcome back to another week of Tech 911, Lifehacker’s advice column designed to answer your most pressing and weird tech questions. This week, we’re answering a question from someone looking for a solid photo storage service for a special project. I’ll let Lifehacker reader Joel explain:
Scanning and Organizing Old Family Photos | Today is the day!
“My mother recently passed away. I have hundreds of old family photos, many of which are over 100 years old, from overseas, and I want to scan them and create a secure cloud gallery that is searchable by subject or name for my extended family. I have a decent scanner; what software should I use for the cloud gallery?”
First of all, I am sorry for your loss, Joel. I think it is wonderful that you are creating an incredible archive of your many family photos. While it may take some time to set up and process, I think you (and future generations) will be very happy with it, especially if it is easily accessible to everyone with a simple hyperlink, and especially if it is searchable. I wish my family had thought of that, because I feel like I only have snippets and bits of our history in text, which doesn't have nearly as much impact.
I know you didn't ask about the scanning process, but I wanted to check in and see what you did to actually get digital copies of these photos? I feel like this is a "you get one shot" type of deal because you probably don't want to go through the hassle of rescanning hundreds of photos if it doesn't turn out perfectly the first time.
