Apple still isn’t a huge proponent of generative AI, but the company finally managed to use machine learning to both improve autocorrect and bring inline text prediction to macOS Sonoma, iOS 17, and iPadOS 17. Now, as you type, Apple will show inline predictions for what you’ll type next. These predictions are grayed out, and a lot of the time, they’re actually good suggestions. When you see a prediction you’d like to make, you can press the space bar and Apple will fill in the text.
How to Permanently Disable Inline Predictive Text on iPhone and iPad
But if you’re a fast touch typer, you already know what you’re going to type. In my experience, it’s faster to type the rest of the word or phrase I have in mind than to take a mental pause to decide, yeah, that’s what I wanted to type, and hit the space bar to move on to the next word. If you find this feature as annoying as I do, the good news is that it’s pretty easy to disable.
For some, inline predictions can help you type faster on your iPhone keyboard. But that doesn’t translate to the speed of typing on a physical keyboard when using a Mac. Every app updated for macOS Sonoma enables the feature by default, along with all of Apple’s own apps, so you’ll see it everywhere.
This feature is only available on iPhone 12 and later, as it uses on-device intelligence to process text and make suggestions.
