You’ve hooked up a new speaker to your sound system, positioned the subwoofer for optimal performance, and adjusted the audio equalizer so everything sounds perfect to your ears. You sit down to relax and listen, but notice something’s not quite right. There’s a noticeable, persistent hum coming from your subwoofer, and it just won’t go away. In this article, we’ll show you how to fix it.
How to Fix a Subwoofer Hum Problem
You can use several approaches to get rid of the annoying buzzing. If the first suggestion doesn't work, try one of the others.
Change the polarity of the subwoofer connection. This is probably the easiest solution to try, as all you have to do is reverse the orientation of the plug. Sometimes one pin is wider than the other, which can prevent you from reversing. In such situations, use an AC grounding adapter to reverse the polarity. Most of these adapters have the same size pins and are available at local hardware stores.
Flip other plugs. When components share a source, such as a power strip or surge protector, the culprit may not be the subwoofer. It may be another two-prong AC plug. Flip the other plugs one at a time to see if that makes a difference.
