Google Stadia Controllers connect directly to the internet through your Wi-Fi network, which reduces lag while you play. When a Stadia Controller can’t connect to Wi-Fi, you’ll find that you either can’t play at all, or you’ll have to use a wired or Bluetooth connection which introduces additional lag depending on the device you’re using.
