It is absolutely essential to find, capture, and control every salutor in The Thaumaturge. Even if you are not interested in the salutor itself, you will be blocked from advancing the related Dimension skill branch until you do. This limits your ability to claim new skills and upgrades, as well as bonuses to your Health and Focus.
Each salutor also offers a unique set of combat abilities that will inevitably be useful against certain types of enemies. Having them all available is always a positive, as you can swap between salutors at will during each round of combat. Be warned, the following contains spoilers.
Upyr is your first salutor, but it is not available for use in combat until you are hypnotized by Rasputin in the village during the Shadows of Sins Past quest. After this, you will have a very useful Heart Dimension salutor at your disposal.
