In order to own more than one pet, you must first max out your relationship with your current pet. To do this, make sure you pet your pet every day and receive the heart dialogue when you do so. There is also the option to fill up the wooden water trough that is located at the back of the farm. You can check how close you are to full hearts via the Pets tab on the pause screen.
Once you have full hearts, you will have to wait a day to receive correspondence from Marnie, who gave you your first pet. She will send a letter, after which you can go to her business and adopt a new pet. Make sure you have enough money, because each new pet will cost you 40,000 coins.
