You can configure Mozilla Thunderbird to alert you when new messages arrive and even specify what the alerts should display. This way, you can see at a glance which emails you should open now and which are spam or messages that can wait.

Navigate to Tools > Options. In Linux, go to Edit > Preferences from the menu.

Open the General category in the settings.

Make sure 'Show an alert' is checked under 'When new messages arrive'.
