Plex works best on the 4th generation Apple TV. However, with a little effort, you can get Plex to work on a 3rd generation Apple TV.
Apple TVs from the third generation and older do not come with the Plex app, and you cannot install additional apps on the device. However, if you’re willing to do a little software hacking, you should be able to get Plex running on an older Apple TV. You can use the PlexConnect workaround to get Plex running on a third-generation Apple TV, but it’s a bit tricky to get working.
