You need to complete Challenges in the Athenyx realm to get Portal Hardeners in Anime Defenders. You can also trade for hardeners if other players want to sell them. There is always a chance that you can get some for free via Anime Defenders codes.
To get a hardened portal, you need to craft it by combining a portal with multiple Portal Hardener items. The number of items depends on the rarity of the portal. For example, the Curse Mythic Portal (Mythic Hardened) requires x1 Curse Mythic Portal and x5 Portal Hardeners.
Portal Hardeners are crafting items in Anime Defenders. You need Portal Hardeners to harden your portal via crafting. By doing so, your upgraded portal will drop another portal of the same rarity (duplicate), so you can try again to get a unit of the portal's rarity. This way, you can use the portal to get a unit of the Secret rarity, for example.
