December is the season of “giving” and all that stuff, but more importantly, it’s the one time of year when you have every right to indulge in sweet treats with mad abandon. Cookies, pies, cakes, cheesecakes, eggnog, cider, fudge, and chocolates of all shapes and sizes are all on the menu this holiday season. One of the cutest chocolate treats I’ve ever seen is the nonpareil. A chocolate morsel covered in a frenzy of colorful sprinkles—it’s exactly the kind of thing you can send as a sweet Christmas message or pile in a bowl on the coffee table for lucky passersby. Here’s how to make them at home.
Homemade Nonpareils Candy
Nonpareil literally means “incomparable” or “nothing like it.” (Maybe not parallel? Whatever helps you remember, of course.) As far as holiday treats go, it’s a tiny drop of chocolate with dozens of crunchy, round sprinkles on the bottom, and it’s truly something special. Pop one in your mouth and you’re instantly introduced to a textural phenomenon and a tiny sugar rush. The bitter chocolate turns velvety smooth as it melts in your mouth, and the sprinkles crunch between your molars. Nonpareils are small, colorful, and flavorful, so you’ll want to make extra.
It’s the kind of thing that only a machine could make, but it’s incredibly easy to duplicate in your own kitchen. All you need is some semi-sweet or dark chocolate to melt and a bottle of round sprinkles. I like the rainbow range, but you can also buy all white, or a festive mix of red, white and green.
Melt 1/4 cup chocolate chips in the microwave. Make sure to stir the chocolate every ten seconds or so, especially as it begins to melt. Pour the chocolate into a small piping bag or a ziplock bag. Seal or tie the bag you are using.
