The new “upload from drive” feature that Google recently introduced can be quite confusing for users, especially if your backup was on autopilot ever since you set up your Google Photos and Drive account (which was probably years ago). But in case you didn’t know, Google Photos is a cloud service offered by Google to store all your photos and videos that were automatically synced to Google Drive before this new change.

Before this new feature was introduced, everything that was previously backed up to Photos would also be automatically backed up to Google Drive and vice versa. That is no longer the case. Google Photos and Drive became separate entities as of July 10, 2019. So now you will need to make sure that photos from your phone are backed up to both Google Drive and Google Photos, as they will no longer back up automatically.
