Your iPhone contains a GPS chip like those in standalone GPS devices. The iPhone uses the GPS chip in conjunction with cellular towers and Wi-Fi networks in a process called assisted GPS, which helps calculate the phone’s position. You don’t have to set up the GPS chip, but you can turn it off or limit its functionality on your iPhone. Here’s how.
