While it’s meant to be a handheld gaming system, you can use it as a basic computer by pulling up your keyboard in Steam Deck. Whether you’re using Chrome to browse the web, search for stuff, or for some other reason, you can do it. The best part is that the virtual keyboard works in both Gaming and Desktop modes, and here’s how to use it.

You will need to press the X button or X + Steam buttons to bring up your keyboard on the Steam Deck. It is important to note however that this is not available on every screen. For example, many games do not allow the use of a keyboard. If you are using Steam OS and you are in a browser or apps/sites with a search bar, the virtual keyboard should automatically appear when you click on the text box.
The best way to use the keyboard is to use the Steam Deck touchscreen directly. If it is not working properly or is damaged for some reason, you also have the option to use your keyboard via touchpads and joysticks.
To hide or remove the keyboard, simply press the B button. Just as pressing X pulls it up, pressing B pushes it down.
