This article explains how to open the Windows XP Recovery Console to troubleshoot major system problems.
Loading the Recovery Console in Windows XP for Beginners
To begin, you need to boot from the Windows XP CD.
Look for the message Press any key to boot from CD. Press any key to force the computer to boot from the disc. If you do not press a key, your PC will continue to boot from the Windows installation currently installed on your hard drive. If this happens, simply restart your PC and try booting from the CD again.
No user intervention is required in this step. Windows is loading files to prepare for a reinstallation of the operating system or for using the Recovery Console.
