It may seem like preparing photos will only cost you time, but there’s no point in taking the time to scan photos if you can’t use them later. Scanning photos together in clusters makes them easier to archive later.
Wipe the photos with a soft, lint-free cloth, as fingerprints, smudges or dust will be visible on the scan. Also wipe the scanner bed.

If you’re not sure what to use and want to get started, your computer already has some decent software installed as part of the operating system. For Windows computers, it’s Windows Fax & Scan, and on Macs, it’s called Image Capture.
