This article will show you how to quickly and efficiently test speaker cables and connections using a standard household battery.
All you need is a regular household battery (preferably a new one), such as an AA, AAA, or 9-volt battery. Don't use anything larger than this. And while you're at it, grab some masking tape and a pen so you can label the wires as you go.
If you have speakers in other rooms (especially with whole-house or multi-room audio systems), you may want an assistant to help you watch or listen. Turn off all equipment before you begin.
Hold the battery in your hand and have the end of a speaker wire handy. Lightly touch the end of the wire to one of the sides of the battery (marked positive or negative with a + or – sign).
