This article explains how ping tests work, how to ping network devices, how to read a ping test, and the limitations of ping tests for versions of Windows that run the Command Prompt, including Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7.
How to Run a Ping Test on Windows 10
Ping uses the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) to generate requests and process responses.
When you perform a ping test, ICMP messages are sent from the local device to the remote device. The receiving device recognizes the incoming messages as an ICMP ping request and responds accordingly.
The time between sending the request and receiving the response on the local device is the ping time.
