Mobile data is a finite resource. Unlike Wi-Fi, most mobile data plans charge you for every megabyte used. You can select which apps can use it, which helps control your monthly usage. WhatsApp is no exception. Here are four ways to optimize your mobile data usage with WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has an option that reduces data during chats and calls. Selecting this option will reduce the amount of data consumed, which will reduce the audio and video quality of the calls you make. You can test the option by enabling it, making a call, and then checking the change in quality.

To enable this data-saver option, open WhatsApp and from the three-dot menu, select Settings > Data & storage usage. Under Call settings on iPhone, toggle Low data usage to On (green). On Android, look for the Use less data for calls option.

Like other messaging apps, you can use WhatsApp to share and receive images and videos. However, media uses a lot of data. These files are automatically downloaded unless you tell WhatsApp otherwise. You can set the app to automatically download multimedia files only when you are on a Wi-Fi network.
